But shortly after 9am today, John was back in his black overalls and jumping into his black Mercedes van to service a boiler he'd fitted.

"I want to stay grounded. "I've got a lot of loyal customers and I don't want to let them down. "I'm doing stuff that was arranged before all this happened."

"My customers are older people and they've treated me just the same after the win which is what I want. "I'm just back off two holidays so I definitely don't think I should be sitting on a beach.

"I will treat myself - but once it's all settled down a bit

"I'll probably slow down a wee bit."

Meet the identical triplets from Estonia set to make history at the Olympics (photos)

Leila, Liina and Lily Luik, are fulfilling their “Trio to Rio” dream as they are set to become the first set of triplets to compete in the same event at the Olympics Games.

The sisters only took up running seriously at the age of 24 and will make history this summer when they represent Estonia at the Olympic games in Rio, Brazil.

“We have been active since childhood. We love dancing. We love to be active, and this pushed us to professional sports,” Lily Luik told Reuters.
“We saw … after one year we had good results in Estonia, and we thought we could achieve something good also outside of Estonia,” she added, “and to do some big competitions like European Championships and the Olympic Games.”

When the Luiks competed in the 2014 European Championships in Zurich, they became the first triplets to do so in that competition.

To actually take home a medal
“would be great,” the sisters told Reuters. “It’s like our dream, and we know that we have to live in reality. It is very hard to compete against the Kenyan runners. We are not at the same kind of level as they are now, but in two or three years we can do that.”

Remi Tinubu Writes Senate, APC, Says Sanction Melaye

The Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, formally reported Senator Dino Melaye to the All Progressives Congress and the Senate, alleging that Melaye would have beaten her up but for the timely intervention of her colleagues.

Tinubu, the wife of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in her separate letters, said the Kogi West Senatorial District senator actually issued threats of rape and assault against her and boasted that he would face no consequence even if he fulfilled the threats.

She urged the leadership of the APC and the Senate to do the needful by investigating the development with a view to saving her from being the victim of Melaye’s threat.

She stated, “What took place at that session was nothing short of a threat of physical assault and abuse against me by Senator Melaye. As such, it was an affront to the Senate, this government and to our party.

“For a party member to so antagonise and attack another APC member in this fashion places the party in disrepute and undermines the unity needed to accomplish the sober task of reforming Nigeria for the better.

“Much of what took place has been widely reported in the media. However, I would like to place on record for the party this formal complaint in hope that the party will act to appropriately sanction Senator Melaye for his malign behaviour.

“In this way, the party will affirm its policy of zero tolerance for gender discrimination and to restore its reputation as a vehicle of positive change and not an arm of regression and intolerance towards women.

“During the 12 July Executive Session, I was duly recognised to speak by the Senate President after Senator Dino Melaye had spoken and berated some Senate colleagues for their perceived roles in the judicial case involving the Senate Ieadership.

“Although I remained silent and attempted no interjection during his statement, Senator Melaye tried to abridge my rights as a Senator by hectoring at me and interrupting my contribution.

“At one point, I cautioned him about the use of his language and the threats made, reminding him that other senators were there by equal right as he and represented their constituents.

“In a burst of apparent rage, Senator Melaye charged at me in what can only be seen as effort to physically attack me.

“The attack was only prevented by some respectful senators, who moved to impede his path or otherwise block him from approaching closer to me. I thank those senators for their personal courage and sense of decorum.

“Senator Melaye hurled foul and vulgar language at me, what he said should never be heard in any public institution, let alone the floor of the Senate.”

Tinubu further alleged that her male colleague denigrated her as a woman, adding, “Senator Melaye threatened to beat me on the floor of the Senate simply because I dared to express an opinion different from his. I am both a ranking Senator and a woman.

“Melaye took neither into consideration as he issued threats of rape and assault, whiIe boasting that he would face no consequence even if he fulfilled these criminal threats.

“Compounding the damage inflicted by Senator Dino Melaye is the fact that we are both of the APC.

“Thus, I am compelled to report this incident. It also gives me great concern that the Senate Ieadership has heretofore been silent on this matter as if condoning the errant behaviour of the Senator.”

She added, “Through this letter, I officially inform the party about the improper behaviour of Senator MeIaye and ask the party to investigate this matter in order to restore the public image and moral standing of the party and of the APC members in the Senate.

“In this manner, we show that we reject the misconduct that has wronged our nation and its people for so long. Only if we act against such excesses will the people truly believe we are committed to the reforms we have promised them.

In her letter to Saraki, Tinubu noted that a week after the indecorous eruption by Melaye,  the Senate leadership had been silent and had not reacted to the threatening misconduct of  Melaye.

She stated, “This serious transgression of legislative behaviour is not allowed to pass, I formally submit for the record that l object to the reckless misconduct of Melaye during the July 12 Executive Session.

“What he did was completely unjustifiable and contrary to the established customs and norms that govern the behaviour of members of this body.

“For merely voicing my opinion on the floor of the Senate, which is the fundamental right and duty of every Senator, I was verbally abused and threatened by Senator Dino Melaye.

“He did not stop there; he used blatantly sexist and misogynistic language offensive to every woman in Nigeria and offensive to every person who truly believes that gender discrimination has no place in the Nigeria we are trying to build for ourselves and all future generations.

“ln summation, unless Melaye is appropriately disciplined, he remains a danger to me and to the Senate at large. He has promised twice within one week to attack me.

“In an attempt to preserve the dignity of the Senate, I have refrained from saying anything in public outside of the Executive Chamber about this incident.

“However, Melaye has become unmoored and has since paraded his misconduct in public as if to threaten a female senator is a badge of pride. lt is a sad day for Nigeria if such misconduct is to be condoned and smiled upon.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the APC in Benue State, Abba Yaro, has called on the party to begin thorough screening, especially psychiatric tests, for all the aspirants contesting elections on the platform of the party in future elections.

Yaro said this would be necessary to forestall reckless behaviour among members, who after winning elections in the party, would turn against the leaders of the party with the aim of running down the party with their uncomplimentary attitudes.

Speaking with one of our correspondents on the reported face-off between Melaye and Tinubu, in Makurdi, Benue State capital, on Tuesday, Yaro described the purported insult on the wife of the party’s national leader as an insult on the party in general.

“For Christ’s sake, how could Melaye have got the guts to talk to our national leader in such a manner? Where was Melaye when Tinubu staked his neck out to fight the Peoples Democratic Party and bring about the desired change into this country?

“Such a person needs to have his head examined thoroughly,” he said.

The state party chairman called on Melaye to publicly apologise to the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and his wife over the attack on the latter at the executive session of the Senate last week.

Nigerian Oil Scam: American man sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for defrauding investors

A Las Vegas man who served in the U.S. Marine Corps was on Tuesday, July 19 sentenced to 25 years in federal prisonTuesday for defrauding investors and the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department in a large-scale multimillion dollar Nigerian oil investment scheme, the Justice Department announced.
Anton Paul Drago, 65, formerly known as Evan Fogarty also was ordered to pay $2.3 million in restitution and serve five years of supervised release after prison. Drago was convicted by a jury in March of 10 felony counts — including wire fraud, submitting false government claims, theft of government funds, lying to federal agents and failing to file a federal tax return.

"Today’s sentence reflects the serious nature of Mr. Drago’s crimes and the substantial harm he inflicted on his investors and the U.S. government,"  said Caroline D. Ciraolo, an assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s tax division in Washington, D.C.

"When confronted with his extensive fraudulent conduct by federal agents, rather than come clean, Mr. Drago chose to double down on his lies and continue the scheme that funded his extravagant lifestyle."

The evidence presented at trial showed that Drago orchestrated  a large-scale Nigerian oil investment fraud scheme from 2004 through 2012. He told investors that the money they invested would be used for legal fees and business expenses to fund the production, refinement and shipping of crude oil from Nigeria to the Bahamas and that the money would fund the purchase of an oil refinery in the Bahamas.

Drago lied to investors about his background and falsely claimed that he was an engineer and expert in the oil industry with over 30 years of experience working worldwide. He also falsely told investors that he was the grandson of the Shell Oil founder and heir to a $500 million trust that he had already spent on the Nigerian oil investment deal.

Investors gave Drago and his co-conspirator, Joseph Rizzuti, more than $2 million that they had used on personal expenses such as rent, groceries, membership at the Tournament Players Club Summerlin golf club, car maintenance, jewelry and travel and luxury purchases at Louis Vuitton among other stores. Drago also failed to file his 2007 federal income tax return in a timely manner, according to the release.
Drago attempted to negotiate a fictitious financial instrument purporting to be an International Bill of Exchange worth $10 million at a Wells Fargo branch in Las Vegas.

Drago also lied to federal agents of the Internal Revenue Service who were investigating him and told them that all of the investor money went to Nigeria.
At the same time Drago was perpetrating the oil scheme, he falsely claimed individual unemployability compensation benefits from the Veterans Affairs.

Drago and a co-defendant promised investors a short-term turnaround with a return of up to 400 percent, according to federal prosecutors. But instead of investing the more than $2 million in the oil deal, the two defendants used the money for personal expenses.

The case was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation and the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Court Jails Ex-NURTW Ibadan Big Fish, As Lawyers Head To Appeal Court

A former Acting Chairman of the Oyo State chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, popularly called Auxiliary, was on Monday sentenced to six years imprisonment for conspiracy to murder.

Auxiliary was sentenced by Justice Eni Esan of the Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan. Also jailed were Saidi Kareem, Abu Kareem and Kazeem Kayode.

The fifth accused person, Taiwo Tijani, who was standing trial with the jailed persons, is already dead.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Esan noted that Auxiliary and others were sentenced because of conspiracy to murder even though they were also tried for murder.

The judge ruled that the prosecuting counsel failed in his attempt to convince the court beyond reasonable doubt over the allegations of murder and attempted murder.

Counsel for the sentenced NURTW members, Mr. Olalekan Ojo and Adeleke Bakare, begged the judge for lighter sentence and to consider the status of Auxiliary and others as breadwinners in their various families with aged parents and other dependents.

Ojo noted that they had already been punished having spent two years in jail since the trial began.

Justice Esan clarified that the two years they had spent in jail would be removed from their six-year jail term without any option of fine.

Ojo and Bakare however said that the ruling would be contested at the Appeal Court.

In 2014, the Lagos Police Command paraded auxiliary for illegal possession of guns.

He was arrested by the command’s Special Anti- Robbery Squad, led by Aba Kyari at the Olodo area of Ibadan on May 10, 2014 after an incriminating statement made by an illegal arms dealer, Abdulazeez Amao, who was arrested with arms hidden in bags of flour.

Judiciary Still Very Slow At Fighting Corruption - Buhari

Speaking yesterday in Abuja at a workshop on the Role of the Judiciary in the Fight against Corruption organised by the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, the National Judicial Institute (NJI), United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Commonwealth Secretariat, President Buhari stated that the judiciary has not met public expectations in eradicating delays in the trial of criminal cases.

He accused the judiciary of not doing enough to support the fight against corruption.

“I am worried that the expectation of the public is yet to be met by the judiciary with regards to the removal of delays and the tolerance for delay tactics by lawyers. When cases are not concluded, the negative impression is given that crime pays.

“So far, the corruption cases filed by government are not progressing as speedily as they should in spite of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act of 2015, essentially because the courts allow some lawyers to frustrate the reforms introduced by law.

“This certainly needs to change if we have to make a success of our collective effort in the fight against corruption,” he said.

Saraki Begs Court To Adjourn Own Appeal, Says Judges Deserve Rest

The Court of Appeal on Monday in Abuja adjourned until October 6 to hear an appeal filed by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, challenging his criminal trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Justice Abdul Aboki, leading four other Justices of the Court, gave the date at the instance of counsel to the parties.

Kanu Agabi (SAN) and Rotimi Jacob (SAN) are representing Mr. Saraki and the Federal Government respectively.

At the resume hearing, Mr. Agabi urged the court to adjourn the matter on account of the convenience of the presiding justices.

“My Lordships, it is glaring that the court is overworked and this is telling on the postures of your Lordships,” he said.

“If we say we should press on because of the exigency of this appeal we could all be dead.

“We shall at this juncture be urging your Lordships to adjourn hearing on this appeal after you have returned from the annual break.”

Meanwhile, the presiding judge interjected to assure parties of the court’s readiness to entertain the appeal.

“We appreciate the concerns advanced by the Senior Advocate Agabi, but we shall not be adjourning on account of our convenience as we are here to serve,’’ Mr. Aboki said.

Mr. Jacobs, counsel to the federal government, opposed the motion for adjournment, adding that the applicant should be eager for the appeal to be heard.

He said, “My Lordships, I am also concern about the effort you people are putting to ensure speedy dispensation of appeals. And this no doubt is telling on your health.

“More so that the court has come to the threshold of this year’s annual recess, it is appropriate to take your deserved rest but not when a matter is ripe for hearing.

“Hearing of this appeal has been adjourned three times at the instance of the appellant applicant.”
Mr. Jacobs further said, “Why have they suddenly developed cold feet towards the application?

“Be that as it may, My Lordships, I shall be guided by the body language of the court to hold that My Lordships’ discretion should prevail in the circumstance,’’ Mr. Jacobs said.

Mr. Saraki is challenging the jurisdiction of the CCT to try him on charges of false and anticipatory assets declaration.

EFCC Grills Pilot Who Flew N1.299b Cash For Fayose, Obanikoro

A pilot has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) how he flew a former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, with N1.299 billion cash for Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Capt. Ahmed Bashir Borodo said the cash was wrapped with green military tarpaulin bags before it was loaded onto the chartered aircraft registered HS125-800 5N-BMT, owned by  Gyro Air Limited.

He said the bags were so heavy that only three people could carry one at a time.

Also, the General Manager of Gyro Air Limited, Mr. Jide West, has disclosed that about $25, 200 was paid for the two chartered flights from Lagos to Akure and Akure to Abuja. EFCC detectives grilled Borodo and West  at the weekend,

The session was part of the ongoing probe of Fayose for allegedly receiving the N1.299billion slush funds from Obanikoro through his associate, Abiodun Agbele.

About N4.745billion was paid into Obanikoro’s company Sylva Mcnamara’s office by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for the 2014 Ekiti governorship.

The slush funds had been  traced by EFCC  to Obanikoro,  Fayose, three firms  and a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore.

Borodo said he only flew the plane in line with the directive of his airline’s management.

He said: “On the 17th June 2014, I was advised around 0700 hours by my Flight Operations Department that we would be operating a chartered flight to Akure from Lagos with estimated departure time of 0830 hours.

“The client was Musiliu Obanikoro, Minister of State for Defence at that time.

“I arrived at the airport at about 0730 hours to prepare for the flight along with my colleague, Captain Olubiyi Famuyiwa and cabin attendant Uyi Okoro. Minutes later, the minister’s aides came to the aircraft with some bullion vans. They started offloading the contents, which were big green tarpaulin bags. Military bags precisely.

“The ADC to the minister was dressed in Navy uniform. This is all I can state now.”

The pilot recalled that the bags were so heavy that three people carried one. He said: “When we noticed that only about three people could carry the bags because of the weight, we told them that because of the weight, we could only take  about eight to nine bags.

“The minister who had disembarked  at that time from his vehicle pleaded with us but we said our aircraft was too small to carry all the bags. We loaded the bags. The minister, his ADC and a friend boarded the aircraft and we departed to Akure , Ondo State.

“ When we arrived at Akure Airport, some soldiers came and there was a bullion van as well to carry the baggage. We departed empty to Lagos on the 17/06/14. On the 18th of June 2014, we were sent from Abuja to Akure to pick Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro and take him to Abuja. He boarded without any luggage with his ADC and we proceeded to Abuja to drop him.”

West gave an insight into how the chartered flight service was procured at $25,200.

He said: “On the 15/16 of June 2014, Lt. Adewale O Eruka called me for a flight to Akure scheduled for 17th and 18th of June 2014 on the instruction of Musiliu Obanikoro. I contacted operation  and the flight was carried out as detailed below: 17/6/14 – Lagos – Akure – Lagos

“I was informed that they carried the bags to Akure with some passengers as indicated in the manifest.

“On 18/6/14 , the flight was  Abuja – Akure – Abuja to  pick up the passengers from Akure back to Abuja. The aircraft was empty from Abuja but brought the passengers back to Abuja. Passengers as indicated in the manifest.

“The flights were paid for; $25,200 was paid for both flights and this was arranged by Lt. Adewale. The crew on the flight on both occasions were: Capt. ‘Biyi Famuyiwa whose service has been terminated by Gyro Air Ltd; Ahmed Borodo the second pilot who accompanied me to EFCC today; and  Uyi Okoro the cabin crew who resigned her appointment from Gyro for further studies abroad. Resignation and termination letters attached.

”I also have a text on my phone dated 19/6/14 from Lt. Adewale detailing how payment will be made for the chartered service.”

As at press time, there were indications that some officials of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Nigeria Air Management Agency (NAMA) may appear before the EFCC, which is intensifying its probe of Fayose.

“We are likely to invite more people for interrogation,” a source said.
